Police say it’s OK to drive Central downtown after mental health incident ends
Central between Main and Waco is back open after Wichita police told community members to avoid the area because of a mental health incident.
Kristopher Gupilan with the police department said that officers responded to reports of an adult male sitting at the top of the parking garage at city hall.
“We did have officers inside of the building working this Sunday, so they were able to swiftly respond to the top of the parking garage,” Gupilan told The Wichita Eagle on Sunday afternoon. “They were able to sit up there and speak with the gentleman for over an hour, and they were able to get it to a peaceful resolution and get him to come off the ledge.”
Gupilan said that the man has since been transported to a medical care facility.
“Everything’s good. He’s safe. No threats to the public,” Gupilan said.
The Wichita Police Department initially issued the community alert on Sunday right before 3 p.m. Community members can now return to the area.
With the beginning of holiday season, Gupilan said that it’s important to check on your loved ones.
“This is just the time of the year when you know you should be checking in on your loved ones and your friends, and if they are experiencing thoughts of suicide or just need someone to talk to, referring them to resources, and walking with them through that process of getting them the help that they need,” Gupilan said.
