Wichita commuters who frequent the I-135 and Kellogg interchange might want to plan for delays — or consider finding an alternate route — for roughly the next two years.

Lanes on both highways will be reduced — along with a reduced speed limit of 50 mph — beginning Monday, Dec. 1.

A month later, the ramp from I-135 northbound to U.S. 54 westbound will also close to accommodate $23 million worth of bridge construction and replacement as well as deck rehabilitation.

The work is expected to last through September 2027.

Starting Dec. 1, the two inside lanes on I-135 will be closed in both directions between Lincoln and Douglas. The two inside lanes from Hillside to Topeka on Kellogg will also be closed in both directions.

On Jan. 5, 2026, the ramp from I-135 northbound to U.S. 54 westbound will close.

During the ramp closure, the Kansas Department of Transportation recommends motorists northbound on I-135 continue past the interchange before taking the 2nd Street exit. Then, drivers should enter southbound I-135 and use the westbound Kellogg exit as a detour.

As with most closures and road works projects, the department suggested that motorists allow time for their commute and use caution while traveling through construction areas. Additional updates on Wichita metro highway projects can be found on the Kansas Department of Transportation website.
