New Monopoly game aims to reflect Wichita. See what local sites made the board
Buying the Museum of World Treasures or scooping up all of downtown Wichita in a single bold move is no longer just a daydream. Those feats are now entirely possible — at least on a game board — with the release of Monopoly: Wichita Edition.
Wichita Mayor Lily Wu, representatives from Top Trumps USA Inc. and Mr. Monopoly himself revealed the Wichita-themed price-tagged squares on Wednesday, turning everything from Buffalo Park to the Sedgwick County Zoo into purchasable parcels for anyone who wants to build their own cardboard empire.
While Wichita has seen variations of the popular economics-themed board game in previous years, including Wichita-Opoly Monopoly Board Game and Wichita State University Shocker-Opoly Monopoly Board Game, the Top Trumps USA editions are the only versions licensed under Hasbro.
“We are so thrilled that Wichita is the newest city to land its very own spot on the global Monopoly map,” Wu said. “It’s not only fun, but it’s a creative way to shine a spotlight on our community, the Air Capital of the World.”
The game includes 22 Wichita-specific properties, including Central Community Church and the Wichita Wind Surge, as well as four aviation-centric squares that traditionally appear as stations or railroads in the original Monopoly. Top Trumps USA representative Josie Cole said the goal was to highlight the city’s character across generations, capturing something for everyone who calls Wichita home.
“We want it to be a good representation of everything in the city,” Cole said. “So we wanted someone who’s 4 years old to open it and someone who’s 80 years old to open it and see something that they like.”
To do so, Cole said, they had to carefully balance how many of what kind of locations they would include. “There’s a couple restaurants, a couple museums, maybe hotels, colleges, sports teams — a little bit of everything.”
The Top Trumps team also had to consider credibility, reputation and community impact when choosing which local businesses and institutions to include. Cole said feedback from the public helped shape the final version of the board, including overwhelming suggestions for locations that were eventually added, like the Sedgwick County Zoo.
Wichita State NIAR and WSU Tech, which also earned spots on the board, were other key inclusions. Wichita State University President Richard Muma said he felt their addition helps reflect the community’s identity, as well as the game’s.
“What I appreciate most about (Monopoly: Wichita Edition) is how perfectly it mirrors everyday life … It’s both a board game and a life preparation workshop,” Muma said.
