Kansas Highway Patrol identifies teen killed after Halloween night police chase, crash
The teen driver of a vehicle that struck another on Halloween night while it was fleeing from Wichita police has died, Kansas Highway Patrol crash log records indicate.
Police had been monitoring a memorial balloon release around 7 p.m. when, Wichita police spokesman Andrew Ford said, officers saw a man they knew to be in violation of probation conditions. When police tried to stop him, he entered a 2018 Chevrolet Malibu with several other people and attempted to flee.
The Malibu collided with another vehicle at Eighth and Edgemoor. Four of the five people in the car fled on foot.
The driver, 16-year-old Dreshawn Hardyway, was found inside the Malibu with what police said appeared to be a gunshot wound to his upper body. Police said a firearm was found inside the vehicle, but it was unclear how Hardyway was injured.
He was taken to Wesley Medical Center in critical condition but was pronounced dead early Monday, the KHP crash log says.
All known Malibu vehicle occupants were teenagers, ages 14 to 16.
Three of the people who fled were found and detained. Police are still looking for the fourth person.
Police ask those who live in the area who may have seen or heard something to contact law enforcement. Officers also encouraged Wichitans to exercise caution if they come in contact with the missing suspect.
