The remains of a man found dead in a Harvey County field earlier this month have been identified as those of 35-year-old Robert Williams of Wichita.

Williams’ remains were found by a farmer in a hay field near the 3000 block of South Hillside, southeast of Newton, on Oct. 1. Initial reports said the remains were in a high state of decomposition, with no clear indication of what led to his death. Police did not find any information at the scene that identified Williams.

On Friday morning, the Harvey County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the remains belonged to Williams. Police said they do not know why Williams was in the area where he was found and are unsure of when exactly he died.

“It is suspected he died in the summer,” Public Information Officer Kyle McCaskey wrote in a Harvey County press release.

The press release said Williams was identified through DNA testing with living relatives. He was reported missing by family in August.

At this time, police do not suspect foul play. No further investigation is anticipated, the press release said.
