Here’s where you can find food banks, soup kitchens in Wichita

Editor’s note: In a bench ruling out of Rhode Island, a federal judge Friday ordered the Trump administration to pay federal nutrition benefits to millions of Americans amid the government shutdown using emergency funds. It wasn’t immediately clear if and when SNAP benefits will proceed.

In the wake of funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) expiring Saturday, Nov. 1, Wichita residents who rely on the benefits, formerly known as food stamps, may be looking for other ways to put food on their table.

SNAP recipients will not receive their monthly benefits beginning in November as the federal government heads toward the fifth week of a shutdown. The U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed SNAP benefits will not be issued, saying that the program’s funding has “run dry.”

“We want people to know that ... not only the food bank, but our partner agencies ... [are] here,” Brian Walker, the president and CEO of the Kansas Food Bank, said at an Oct. 28 news conference. “They are here, ready to help the folks that come to their door, just like they are every day of the week.”

Walker said around 188,000 people across the state of Kansas rely on SNAP benefits every month and encouraged those looking for resources to visit KansasFoodSource.com, which provides a directory for Kansas’ 105 counties.

If you rely on SNAP, or simply need a means to put food on the table, here are some resources in Wichita. Did we miss any? Email lsmith@wichitaeagle.com.
