Those traveling north out of Wichita on I-135 next weekend may want to adopt an alternate route after the Kansas Department of Transportation postponed previously scheduled roadworks to the start of November due to October rain.

Starting at 6 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, northbound I-135 will close at the North Junction. In addition, the southbound I-135 ramp to eastbound K-96 and the westbound K-96 exit ramp to North Hydraulic, will be closed.

During the closure, construction crews will remove formwork and overhang brackets from the recently poured bridge structure.

The Kansas Department of Transportation recommended that northbound motorists take the K-96 ramp, then the Hillside exit, before heading back on K-96 to rejoin I-135 north of the construction zone.

The state agency also suggested that drivers traveling southbound on I-135 who need to access eastbound K-96 should exit at North Hydraulic. Then, they can continue north on Hydraulic and use the on-ramp to eastbound K-96.

Northbound I-135 and connecting ramps are expected to reopen late Sunday afternoon, the Kansas Department of Transportation said.

More closures affecting westbound K-96 traffic at I-135 are likely through the rest of the year and beyond as the Gold Project Phase 2B progresses. The interchange project, which will create a new direct connection for eastbound K-96 traffic from northbound I-235 and new ramps for westbound K-96 traffic at I-135, isn’t scheduled to conclude until spring 2028.
