One person died early Monday morning following a fiery crash near Maize, authorities say.

The name, age and city of residence of the person killed were not immediately released.

Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Brandon Stitt said a Pontiac G6 was traveling west on 45th Street North where the pavement transitions to gravel just west of 135th Street when “the driver lost control on the gravel and hit a tree.”

Sheriff’s deputies and officers from the Maize and Colwich police departments responded to an Apple crash alert in the area around 1:45 a.m. Monday and found the wrecked car on fire.

“Colwich firefighters located one person inside the vehicle, who was pronounced dead at the scene,” Stitt said by email.

The Sedgwick County Coroner’s Office was working Monday to confirm that person’s identity, he said.

“The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office Major Crash Team is investigating the circumstances leading up to the crash,” Stitt said.
