A ramp connecting two major highways will close from early Saturday until late Sunday evening as the Kansas Department of Transportation continues work to improve the North Junction in Wichita.

Starting at 6 a.m. Saturday, the ramp from southbound I-135 to eastbound K-96 will be closed. Southbound motorists on I-135, should take I-135 to 29th Street N. before turning north onto Hydraulic and using a new ramp to go onto eastbound K-96. The southbound I-135 ramp will reopen Sunday evening.

The construction on the I-135 ramp is part of a $141 million segment of roadwork for the North Junction project. The five-year project is estimated to be completed in late 2026. Additional temporary closures on I-135 are likely to pop up over the next year.

In the meantime, the Kansas Department of Transportation recommends drivers allocate extra travel time, follow detour signs and use alternate routes if driving through the area this weekend.

An outline of the project can be found on the Kansas Department of Transportation website.

Southbound motorists on I-135 should leave the highway at 29th Street N. then turn north onto Hydraulic and use a new ramp to go onto eastbound K-96.
