A spicy place to spend your weekend: the Hatch Chilefest in Wichita

Late August always brings Hatch green chile season to Wichita, thanks to Johnson’s Garden Center owner Marty Johnson. For years, he’s been traveling to Hatch, New Mexico, to pick up the chiles, bring them back to Wichita and roast them for locals to use in their recipes. This weekend, he’ll be celebrating at his flagship center on West 13th Street.

It’s one of the spicier options for fun this weekend in Wichita but not the only one. The oldest continuous aviation event in the state is taking place, as are several concerts. Keep reading for more ideas about how to spend your free time:

Hatch Green ChileFest

11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Johnson’s Garden Centers, 2707 W. 13th St.

Johnson’s Garden Center’s Hatch Green ChileFest returns on Saturday to the center on West 13th Street, and those who attend can sample fire-roasted peppers, enjoy lunch from local food trucks and take in live demos. Bags of fresh or frozen chiles also will be for sale. The event will last from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and admission is free. Jonnson also will take the chiles “on the road” around Wichita, selling them from 4 to 9 p.m. Sept. 5 at Central Standard Brewing, 156 S. Greenwood, and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 7 at Orie’s Garlic Fest, 129 N. Rock Island.

Fly-in at Jabara

8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jabara Airport, 3612 N. Webb

Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 88 will be hosting its 62nd annual fly-in at the Colonel James Jabara Airport on North Webb Road on Saturday. Events include flight competitions, aircraft judging and a silent auction. Breakfast and lunch will be available for purchase. Tickets are $5 for adults, ages 17 and under get in free. Beatles vs. Stones

7 p.m. Friday, Century II’s Mary Jane Teall Theater, 225 W. Douglas

A show at Century II will imagine what it would be like if two of history’s greatest bands — The Beatles and The Rolling Stones — engaged in a musical showdown. It will feature Beatles tribute band Abbey Road and Rolling Stones tribute band Rolling Stones Show, who will cover both bands’ biggest hits. It starts at 7 p.m. on Friday in Century II’s Mary Jane Teall Theater. Tickets range from $70-$95 and are available at selectaseat.com, by phone at 316-755-SEAT or in person at the Select-a-Seat box office inside Intrust Bank Arena.

Lunchtime concert series

Wednesdays through September, Heritage Square, 115 E. William

The Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum’s is about to bring back its annual Heritage Square Concert Series, which will happen from noon to 1 p.m. every Wednesday in September. It will start this coming Wednesday with a show by mariachi group Mariachi Jalisco. The House Band, a rhythm and blues act, will perform on Sept. 10, followed by polka act Intrepid Brass on Sept. 17 and bluegrass band Dear Friends on Sept. 24. The shows are free, and people are invited to bring their lunches and watch the shows in the square just outside the museum.

Blues Traveler, Gin Blossoms concert

6 p.m. Thursday, Capitol Federal Amphitheater, 230 S. Broadway, Andover

Popular 1990s acts Blues Traveler (“Run Around”) and Gin Blossoms (“Hey Jealousy”) will both perform at a concert set for 6 p.m. on Thursday at Andover’s Capitol Federal Amphitheater. The groups are on a 30-date co-headlining tour that also includes opening act Spin Doctors. Kansas Doll Show

Saturday and Sunday, DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Wichita Airport, 2098 Airport Road

The Kansas Doll Show returns to Wichita this weekend with the theme “Butterfly Garden: Where Babies Bloom.” It will happen on Saturday and Sunday at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Wichita Airport and will include dozens of vendors selling reborn dolls, silicone dolls, doll clothes and doll accessories. It will also include classes and contests. It’s open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. General admission tickets are $10 each day, but children ages 2 and under will be admitted for free. They’ll be sold at the door.

Jackyl in concert

8 p.m. Friday, Cotillion, 11120 W. Kellogg

Rock band Jackyl, which has been on the scene since the early 1990s, will return to Wichita for a Friday show at The Cotillion. Jackyl, which originated in Georgia, is known for songs like “The Lumberjack,” “I Stand Alone” and “When Will it Rain.” Their show will feature opening act Nuclear Football. It starts at 8 p.m., and the doors will open at 7 p.m. TiIckets are $37.36 at thecotillion.com
