U.S. News & World Report released its 2025 ranking of the best regional hospitals, and one Wichita hospital ranked among the top four in Kansas.

The publication looked at the performance of more than 4,000 hospitals based on factors like risk-adjusted mortality rates, preventable complications and level of nursing care, according to a July 29 press release. When looking at Kansas’ top hospitals, Wesley Healthcare in Wichita ranked fourth in the state, just behind a hospital in Merriam.

“These local hospital rankings, entirely performance-driven, equip individuals and their families, in consultation with their medical providers, to choose the highest quality care available in their own communities,” Ben Harder, chief of health analysis and managing editor at U.S. News, said in a press release.

Wesley Medical Center is located at 550 N. Hillside St. in Wichita. Wesley Woodlawn Hospital & ER is located at 2610 N. Woodlawn Blvd.

The top hospital in Kansas, according to U.S. News’ July 29 report, is the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas. Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka got second place in the statewide overall ranking, followed by Advent Health Shawnee Mission in third.

In addition to its place in the top four, Wesley Medical Center was also recognized in U.S. News & World Report’s best regional hospitals for community access. Wesley and Stormont Vail Hospital were the only Kansas hospitals that made it onto that report.

Wesley recently scored a B hospital safety grade from watchdog group Leapfrog this spring. That organization calculates its scores by looking at data from the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and other supplemental data sources and voluntary self-reporting, working with the oversight of an expert panel.

Here are the other top-ranking Kansas hospitals’ Hospital Safety scores, from Leapfrog:

Similar to the Leapfrog safety scores, U.S. News’ rankings are meant to be used as a guide when seeking medical care. When experiencing an emergency, individuals should seek medical care from the nearest hospital.

“For most Americans, health care decisions are made close to home. The Best Regional Hospitals rankings underscore the difference high-performing local medical centers make,” Harder said in the press release.

In addition to the University of Kansas’ first place state ranking, it also ranked the 50th best hospital in the U.S. for cancer care, 33rd for cardiology, hearty and vascular surgery, 23rd for ears, nose and throat, 30th in geriatrics and 32nd in neurology and neurosurgery.

Wesley was recognized as being “high performing” in treatment for back surgery, COPD, diabetes, gynecological care, heart attack, heart bypass surgery, leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma, and stroke.

In addition to the best hospitals in each state, U.S. News also releases its honor roll, which highlights 20 hospitals across 13 different states. The honor roll, according to U.S. News’ website, is described as the best of the best regional hospitals. No Kansas hospitals made it onto the list.
