Legion post to offer free school supplies, hair services for kids

American Legion Post 273 will donate hair services and school supplies to children during three back-to-school events.

The American Legion Auxiliary, a women’s organization within the post, is hosting the events at the post at 1335 N. Hydraulic. Children must be present to receive the school supplies and hair services.

The post will give away school supplies from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, provide barber cuts, braids and press-n-curls from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday and offer barber cuts from noon to 5 p.m. Monday.

Janice Brown of the auxiliary said the post will give away more than 300 backpacks filled with school supplies. She said the giveaway started when her mother, Jewayne Brown, was president of the auxiliary. She and another officer came up with the idea about 10 years ago. She said they added hair services about three years ago.

“I’m very, very proud of where this has gone,” she said, talking about how much the event has grown over the years. When they started, she said, members bought supplies with their own money, but it’s now evolved into a larger giveaway with sponsors and money raised through raffles and fundraisers.

“Kids are walking around, parents are everywhere, it’s a big fellowship,” she said.

The event is free and open to the public. For questions, call Post 273 at 316-264-3752.
