Traffic will shift on this KS highway for months. See how it could affect your commute

Drivers who regularly commute to or from Derby along K-15 may want to adjust their route.

Starting July 14, the Kansas Department of Transportation will kick off a five-month road project that will close parts of the highway.

On Monday, crews will close the inside lanes of K-15 between Meadowlark Boulevard and Patriot Avenue in both directions until July 23 in order to build temporary crossovers. After July 23, traffic will run in both directions on the southbound lanes. That traffic configuration will remain in effect until early November.

Construction, spearheaded by Pearson Construction, will realign Nelson Drive and add a new east-west road between Patriot and Red Powell Drive. A traffic signal will also be installed at K-15. Construction will be completed in December with traffic reopening on K-15 in November.

Until then, KDOT advised motorists to allocate extra travel time, follow detour signs and use alternative routes if possible.

“Please exercise caution while traveling through the area,” the press release read.

A map of the traffic shift is available on the KDOT website.
