Former Wichita officer showed up to work under the influence. He lost his license
A former Wichita Police Department officer was stripped of his law enforcement certification after he showed up to work under the influence of alcohol.
Javon Wheeler was employed by the department from Jan. 22, 2024 to Sept. 24, 2024, according to a summary order of revocation from the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers’ Standards and Training, also known as KS-CPOST.
Wheeler did not respond to a call or text message seeking comment for this story.
The summary order gave this account:
Wheeler was working a shift on Sept. 20, 2024. An officer working with him noticed the odor of alcohol coming from Wheeler. A second officer also noticed the odor.
He was asked to take a breath test. Wheeler agreed and the test came back with a blood alcohol content level of .038.
At that level, a person may experience some loss of judgment, relaxation, an altered mood or loss of shyness, according to Medical News Today. The level to be considered legally intoxicated in Kansas is higher, at .08 or above.
KS-CPOST began an investigation and interviewed Wheeler on Feb. 28, 2024.
In the interview, Wheeler said he drank alcohol on the evening of Sept. 19, 2024, before working a shift the following day. He said he woke up and felt fine, went to work and didn’t think he was under the influence.
The commission said it revoked Wheeler’s officer certification because of unprofessional conduct. Wheeler “performed law enforcement duties while under the influence of alcohol,” the summary order said.
