Wichita man, 82, was cycling with friends when he turned in front of semi, official says
An 82-year-old Wichita man, riding bicycles with friends, died on Tuesday morning after turning in front of a semi on a rural road just south of Andale, Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Branden Stitt said.
The accident happened at 9:08 a.m. The man was pronounced deceased at 9:34 a.m. after the friends and first responders tried life-saving measures, he said.
The 37-year-old Hutchinson man driving the semi and trailer stayed on scene. The cyclists were headed north on North 247th Street West, near West 29th Street North, and so was the semi driver.
“It appears that (the semi driver went into the) southbound lane to go around the cyclist and the cyclist did a U-turn into the truck,” Stitt said.
The intersection is about 4 miles south of Andale.
