Here’s when you can buy fireworks in Sedgwick County cities, towns

As the Fourth of July approaches, people in Sedgwick County and around the U.S. will celebrate the holiday with a boom, purchasing and setting off fireworks.

But despite a new law allowing firework sales year-round in Kansas, Sedgwick County and many of its cities are more strict. Each city sets its own rules for when fireworks can be bought, sold and set off — and violating these rules can carry a fine.

Firework sales in Goddard started Friday, with other cities allowing sales starting June 27. But, the county warns, people are not allowed to purchase fireworks in Goddard and possess them outside of the city’s boundaries — at least until June 27 when other cities allow sales.

“Make sure that you know what the rules are for your particular city, or if you’re out in an unincorporated area, know those rules for proper shooting times,” William Herold, a captain with Sedgwick County Fire, said.

Rules can also vary regarding the type of fireworks residents can set off so it’s generally best, according to the county, to purchase fireworks where you plan to set them off.

In Wichita, non-aerial fireworks — those that do not shoot up into the air — can be set off from June 27 through July 5, from 10 a.m. to midnight. Aerial fireworks can only be used from July 3 thought July 5. Violating Wichita fireworks laws can result in a $1,000 fine for a first-time offense.
