A body in “advanced decomposition” was found Thursday at the park next to the Sedgwick County Zoo, an official said.

A park employee found the body around 1:15 p.m. in a thick grass-covered area of Sedgwick County Park, Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Branden Stitt said. The body was found in the part of the park near 21st Street North and Ridge. The body was found outside a tent near a single campsite, he said.

“Due to the condition of the remains, detectives have not been able to immediately determine the decedent’s age or gender,” Stitt said. “The advanced decomposition has also prevented them from identifying any visible signs of injury.”

Personal belongings were found near the body as well, Stitt said.

Stitt said the sheriff’s office is working with the coroner’s office to identify the deceased. Detectives are also reviewing missing person’s cases. The coroner’s office will also determine the cause and approximate time of death.

Anyone with potential information about the person or who visited the park recently and may be able to provide insight is asked to called detectives at 316-660-5300.
