Be aware: Extra activity downtown Saturday may be because of planned protests
A military celebration in Washington, D.C., Saturday, June 14 will happen at the same time as more than 1,500 protests across the nation — including in Wichita.
“No Kings Day” — branded as a “national day of defiance” — will take place Saturday, which is also Flag Day and President Donald Trump’s birthday. The nation’s capital will be holding a military parade to celebrate the U.S. Army’s 250th birthday featuring military flyovers, musical performers and more.
Wichita’s No Kings protest is one of 14 organized in Kansas.
The local protest has been organized by Defend Democracy ICT, which has been demonstrating against the Trump administration’s policies semiweekly since February. Saturday’s protest will be held at the corner of Douglas and Broadway, the group’s usual meeting place.
No Kings isn’t the only demonstration happening in Wichita, however. Saturday is the second day of Somewhere Fest in downtown Wichita, along with a second protest and a Flag Day rally.
Here’s a look at what’s going on around the downtown area.
Families Belong Together
This protest for immigrant rights will begin at Nomar Plaza at 9 a.m. and march downtown.
The Facebook event reads: “Join us as we raise our voices for our immigrant families, for justice, and for dignity. Too many families are being torn apart. Too many lives are being disrupted. It’s time to stand up and say: Enough is enough.”
The event describes the protest as a peaceful protest and asks people to bring signs.
“Let’s stand in respect and solidarity with one another and all who believe in justice,” the Facebook event reads.
Celebrate America Flag Day Rally
Hosted by the Sedgwick County Republican Party, this rally to celebrate Flag Day and Trump’s birthday will be held at Union Station from noon to 1 p.m. — about the same time as the No Kings protest.
“A few people have expressed reservations about tomorrow’s event but we are going forward. [The Wichita Police Department] and Sheriff [Jeff] Easter are confident we have chosen a good location far enough from the other event and they will be on location,” the Sedgwick County Republican Party said in a June 13 Facebook post. “There is a ‘No Kings’ protest going on tomorrow but we know our Heavenly Father is the ONE TRUE KING and we will NOT be deterred!”
Organizers ask eventgoers to bring Trump and American flags.
‘No Kings’ protest
The No Kings Day protest will be held at the corner of Broadway and Douglas from noon to 1:30 p.m.
“This is a stand against authoritarianism and the growing disregard for democratic norms,” No Kings organizers said in a news release. “We are here to remind our leaders that power belongs with the people—not kings, not billionaires, not dictators.”
Speakers, which include the Kansas Immigration Coalition and Sunflower Community Action, will begin at 1 p.m.
The Facebook event emphasizes the protest is a peaceful one and reminds demonstrators to not engage with possible counter protesters or agitate others. Protesters should also keep sidewalks and roadways clear for traffic.
