Wichita-based Hunter Health Clinic is alerting patients whose records may have been accessed in a cybersecurity incident in September 2024.

A notice of the incident was placed on Hunter Health’s website. The notice said the clinic discovered that an unauthorized party accessed a clinic employee’s email account on Sept. 30, 2024.

“Upon learning of this issue, we contained the threat and immediately commenced a prompt and thorough investigation,” the notice said. “As part of our investigation, we have been working very closely with external cybersecurity professionals experienced in handling these types of incidents.”

On May 1, after investigating the incident with the help of cybersecurity professionals, the clinic learned that some of their patients’ sensitive information may have been compromised.

Such information includes some patients’ full names, dates of birth, social security numbers, driver’s licenses, financial account information, medical and clinical information, health insurance information and other government identification numbers, according to the clinic.

Hunter Health began alerting affected patients on Thursday, May 15. Patients whose Social Security numbers were in files that were breached have been offered complimentary credit monitoring.

The clinic is not disclosing how many patients may have been affected at this time, but expects that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office for Civil Rights will release those numbers after reviewing the clinic’s report, Hunter Health Chief Advancement Officer Dennis Clary said Wednesday.

“Right now our focus remains supporting the potentially impacted individuals,” Clary said. “While we have no evidence that the information at issue has been misused, out of an abundance of caution we continue to encourage notified individuals to remain diligent in reviewing their medical records and financial information.”

Anyone with questions or concerns about the breach and their information is encouraged to call 1-877-547-9047, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Hunter Health is a non-profit clinic with three locations in Wichita.
