West Wichita has its first dog park, and another one just got upgraded. Here’s where
West Wichita residents will finally have somewhere to take their dogs to play.
West Country Acres Dog Park, at 750 N. Country Acres, will have a ribbon cutting at 11:30 a.m Wednesday after years of requests from west side residents to the City Council.
Wichita has six other dog parks — one south, one southeast, two north, one downtown and one just west of downtown in Delano.
Park-goers will be able to sit on shaded benches while their dogs roam freely. There are drinking fountains for people and pets, plus a dog washing station for a “convenient rinse before heading home.”
The city initially said the cost to build Country Acres was estimated between $350,000 to $750,000. The final price tag came in at $800,000, which included design, land acquisition, construction, art and administrative costs, city spokesperson Megan Lovely said in an email.
A 10-minute drive away from Country Acres Dog Park, a newly renovated dog park has reopened to north Wichita residents.
K-9 Rooster Dog Park at 2127 N. Meridian had its ribbon cutting Monday. The park is near the intersection of 21st Street and Amidon.
The name commemorates fallen Wichita police canine Rooster, who was shot and killed on March 18, 2017, after attempting to apprehend an armed man at a south Wichita mobile home park.
Like Country Acres, the park boasts shaded seating, hydration stations, a dog wash area and gravel entrances, according to the city.
The cost to renovate the park was $600,000, including design, construction and administrative costs.
“The park reflects the best about Wichita, a deep sense of respect, community, pride and love for our pets,” Wichita Director of Parks and Recreation Reggie Davidson said at the park’s ribbon cutting. “Today we’re proud to reopen this space with renewed commitment to those values.”
