Two firefighters were injured and several residents were able to escape in an apartment fire Monday near downtown Wichita.

A call about an apartment fire came in at 5:05 p.m. at the Water’s Edge apartment complex at 400 W Central Ave. The fire started inside a unit in building 30, a Wichita Fire Department captain said at the scene.

Fire crews arrived and found the fire on a second-floor unit and witnessed several people running out. Firefighters were able to get the fire extinguished and some neighboring units received smoke damage, the captain said.

Two firefighters received minor injuries but did not go to the hospital. Three people escaping the apartment reported not “feeling well” and were checked out by EMS at the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and power was cut off the building 30.
