Wichita will give away free low-flow showerheads and sink aerators starting Monday as part of a program intended to decrease water use amid the drought.

It will be first come, first serve and a limit of one of each per household. No proof of residency is required.

The city ordered 2,412 shower heads and 1,500 aerators. A low-flow shower head can save you 2,700 gallons a year and an efficient faucet and aerator can save 700 gallons, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Sink aerators are the mesh screens that screw into a faucet, reducing water use and creating a more consistent water stream.

“These water savings add up to both cost-savings for families and water-saving for our community,” the city said in a news release Friday.

The shower heads and aerators can be picked up at the information desk at city hall, 455 N. Main; at neighborhood resource centers and at public libraries.

As of April 7, Cheney Lake, where Wichita gets its water from, was about 57% full, the city reported. Residents have been under water use restrictions since last fall.

The showerheads and aerators are being given away as part of a water conservation rebate program it has offered for 13 years. The city also offers rebates on roughly 150 water-saving devices, including dishwashers, toilets and barrels.

The city has roughly $96,000 earmarked for the rebate program.
