Wichita police are looking for parties on Sept. 15 – not to bust them but to attend them.
The Wichita Police Department, along with the Wichita Fire Department, is participating in Celebrate Safe Communities, an annual event in which residents are encouraged to host block parties to get to know their neighbors and keep the area safe.
People can register to host a block party at www.wichita.gov/celebratesafe, and it is the host’s responsibility to notify neighbors about the time and location of the party.
The city of Wichita is recommending a time frame of 5:30 to 9 p.m. that night, a Tuesday.
Residents are free to plan whatever type of party they like – that includes barbecue cookouts, ice cream socials or even fish frys.
Wichita City Council members, police officers and firefighters will visit some of the registered parties as time allows.
The longest-range weather forecast The Eagle could locate Thursday was that of the 2015 Old Farmer’s Almanac, which predicts thunderstorms and then a sunny, cool week.
