Garden City man, 21, killed in Highway 50 crash near Deerfield
A 21-year-old Garden City man was killed early Saturday when the truck he drove veered off Highway 50 and went airborne, about a mile and a half west of Deerfield, the Kansas Highway Patrol said in a crash report.
Gerardo Gonzalez-Rivera was eastbound in a 2001 Chevy when the truck left Highway 50 on the left side around 4:45 a.m., the report said. Gonzalez-Rivera overcorrected, swerved across both lanes of traffic and went into a ditch, then shot across the front yard of a home into a field.
There, the truck skidded sideways and went airborne. It touched the ground four times before landing in the field, the report said. At some point, Gonzalez-Rivera was ejected from the truck, the highway patrol said.
Deerfield is about 18 miles west of Garden City in Kearny County.
