Wichita-area schools canceled, businesses to close Tuesday as winter storm moves in

Wichita and several surrounding school districts canceled class Tuesday ahead of a winter storm expected to bring snow and extreme cold.

Here’s a quick look at some of the school districts, businesses and city facilities that will be closed. If you have additions for the list, you can email them to online@wichitaeagle.com.

Wichita Public Schools

USD 259, the state’s largest school district, canceled classes for Tuesday, Feb. 18. All non-attendance centers will also be closed, the district said in an email.

“All evening activities on Tuesday are also canceled,” an email said. “Employees assigned to snow removal crews and SSC-based security staff will receive specific instructions from their supervisors.”

Derby Public Schools

The district canceled classes Tuesday ahead of inclement weather.

“This includes Latchkey, Boys & Girls Club, and all extracurricular activities and practices scheduled for the day,” the school’s webpage read.

Andover Public Schools

Due to forecast hazardous weather conditions, the district canceled classes for Tuesday.

“All practices and activities for the day also are canceled,” the school’s social media page said. “We will continue monitoring weather conditions on Tuesday and will communicate if additional changes to the week’s schedule are necessary.”

El Dorado Public Schools

The district canceled classes Tuesday due to anticipated inclement weather overnight.

“Certified staff should plan to participate in a virtual professional development day,” the district’s website said. “We will continue to monitor the weather to make a determination for the rest of the week. Please stay safe and stay warm.”

Maize Public Schools

The district canceled class Tuesday and Wednesday ahead of a forecast winter storm.

“On both days, school and district buildings will be closed,” the school’s website shows. “On Tuesday, there will be no activities, practices, or events. Please watch for potential communications from coaches regarding Wednesday practices.”

Haysville Public Schools

The school’s website said classes have been canceled for Tuesday due to inclement weather.

Sedgwick County Zoo

The zoo said it will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday due to forecast extreme temperatures.

“This closure includes all scheduled education programs,” an email said.

Wichita State University

The university will close its campus Tuesday and classes will be held remotely.

“Instructors are encouraged to connect with their students regarding the status of their classes, and students should reach out to their instructors for questions,” a university news release said.

KU School of Medicine in Wichita

The campus will be closed Tuesday due to inclement weather.

“Employees who would normally be on campus will be expected to work remotely,” an email said. “All KU clinics will be closed. Classes and learning activities will be moved to a virtual format, where possible.”

Via Christi outpatient therapy centers

The following locations will be closed Tuesday due to forecast weather conditions.

Ascension Via Christi Therapy Center on St. Teresa (14800 St Teresa St, Wichita, KS 67235)

Ascension Via Christi Rehabilitation Hospital Outpatient Rehab (1151 N Rock Road, Wichita, KS 67206)

Ascension Via Christi Therapy Center on Shannon Woods (10100 E Shannon Wds St, Wichita, KS 67226)

Ascension Via Christi Therapy Center on Founders’ Circle (Physical Therapy, 1947 N Founders Circle, Wichita, KS 67206)

Ascension Via Christi Therapy Center in Derby (1640 Tall Tree Road #200, Derby, KS 67037)

Ascension Via Christi Therapy Center at 9828 Shannon Woods (9828 E Shannon Woods Circle Suite 200 Wichita, KS 67226)

Ascension Via Christi Therapy Center on Shannon Woods (10100 E Shannon Woods Circle Wichita, KS 67226)

“As of now, all Ascension Medical Group clinics, Ascension Via Christi Imaging locations and Via Christi Occupational Health locations in the Wichita and surrounding areas are scheduled to be open,” an email said. “We will determine tomorrow morning if additional closures are needed.”

Some services at McConnell Air Force Base

The base will be on mission-essential-only status on Tuesday.

The medical clinic, pharmacy, visitor control center, child development center, commissary and base exchange will be closed.

The base’s west gate will be closed, with access at the east gate.

Exploration Place

The science exploration center will be closed Tuesday due to a forecast winter storm. Its website said it plans to reopen at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

City of Wichita facilities

The following city facilities will be closed Tuesday due to weather:

  • Golf Wichita Courses
  • OJ Watson Park
  • Cowtown
  • Mid-America All-Indian Museum
  • Botanica
  • The Wichita Art Museum, which is already closed to the public on Tuesdays
  • Atwater Neighborhood Resource Center
  • Evergreen Neighborhood Resource Center
  • Colvin Neighborhood Resource Center
  • All Wichita Public Library locations
  • The Great Plains Nature Center
  • Brooks C&D Landfill

Senior centers, Meals on Wheels

The Wichita-area Meals on Wheels program will not run and the following senior service centers in Wichita are closed Tuesday.

Wichita Downtown Senior Center

Wichita Linwood Senior Center

Wichita Northeast Senior Center

Wichita Orchard Park Senior Center

Wichita Senior Employment Program

Senior Services of Wichita Administration
