A full moon that will pass in front of Mars can be seen from Wichita skies on Monday evening.

The wolf moon will occur the evening of Monday, Jan. 13. The moon will appear full starting Sunday evening and through Wednesday morning.

This full moon is special in that it will block the planet Mars from Earth’s view, the only time it will occur in 2025. This is called a “lunar occultation.” Mars will be covered for just over one hour with the time of the disappearance depending on location.

One chart shows the disappearance in Wichita beginning at 7:57 p.m. and ending at 9:02 p.m.

According to NASA, Native American full moon names began being published by the Maine Farmers’ Almanac in the 1930s. The wolf moon came from wolves that would howl outside villages during the cold winter weather.

The sun sets at 5:32 p.m. in Wichita on Jan. 13. The National Weather Service expects that evening to be mostly clear, with a low of around 19 degrees.

What other full moons can I see in 2025?

The next full moon is the snow moon, which will peak Feb. 12.

Here are the full moons you’ll be able to see this year, from Space.com:

  • Feb. 12: snow moon
  • March 14: worm moon
  • April 12: pink moon
  • May 12: flower moon
  • June 11: strawberry moon
  • July 10: buck moon
  • Aug. 9: sturgeon moon
  • Sept. 7: corn moon
  • Oct. 6: harvest moon
  • Nov. 5: beaver moon
  • Dec. 4: cold moon
