Woman with three children in vehicle arrested after hitting pedestrian, Wichita police say
A 27-year-old Augusta mother remained in Sedgwick County Jail on Tuesday afternoon after police say she hit a pedestrian with a car in east Wichita while under the influence of alcohol.
She had her three children in the car during the accident, police said.
The 21-year-old Wichita woman who was hit was taken to the hospital with critical injuries.
The accident happened at 6:17 p.m. Monday at Lincoln and Rock. The driver was headed north on Rock and the pedestrian was in the crosswalk crossing Rock from east to west, Wichita police spokesperson Kristopher Gupilan said.
Police are still investigating who had the right-of-way.
The Augusta woman had her three children — 7-year-old girl, 4-year-old boy and 2-year-old boy — in the 2014 Ford Taurus she was driving. The pedestrian was the only person injured.
The driver stayed on scene after the accident and was arrested on suspicion of aggravated battery while driving under the influence, three counts of endangering a child and one count each of driving with a suspended license and disobeying a traffic control device, police said.
“It is believed that alcohol is a contributing factor in the collision,” Gupilan said.
