Towne West remains closed, anchor stores open, on big Black Friday shopping day
Towne West Square remained closed on Friday, known as Black Friday, after the power was turned off Nov. 20 for lack of payment.
The day after Thanksgiving is known as one of the biggest retail sales days of the year as shoppers hit the stores looking for sales.
The anchor stores — Dick’s Sporting Goods, JCPenney and Dillard’s Clearance Center — all were open Friday. Those stores have their own utilities and their bills are paid, according to Evergy.
The mall has had its power turned off multiple times in the past year-plus. The water at the mall was also turned off earlier this year for lack of payment to the city.
New-York based Kohan Retail Investment Group bought the struggling mall in 2019. Mike Kohan is the managing member of the Kohan group. He did not respond to a text Friday — nor has he replied when recent power outages happened.
