Calendar blue moon rises Friday
There will be a blue moon — by the definition of the second full moon in a calendar month — early Friday, the last day of July.
The month started with a full moon, on July 2, and will end with one on the last day of the month. The moon will reach its fullest at 5:42 a.m. CDT Friday. When you see it Friday night it will be just past full.
The last blue moon by this definition was in August 2012. The next will be in January 2018, to be followed closely by another in March of that year. And then, for your long-term holiday planning, there will be one on Halloween in 2020, and on New Year’s Eve in 2028.
A blue moon can also be defined as the third full moon in a season with four. By that definition, the next blue moon will occur on May 21, 2016.
