Ready to turn your clocks back an hour, Kansas? Here’s when daylight saving time ends
Enjoy the extra hour of daylight, because starting this weekend, it’ll get darker even faster.
While the days have been getting shorter and shorter since the summer solstice, a whole hour will be shaved off your evenings on Sunday, Nov. 3, thanks to the end of daylight saving time.
Daylight saving time ends Sunday at 2 a.m., when clocks will be turned back one hour, giving Wichitans an extra hour of sleep. While the sun will set at 6:29 p.m. in Wichita on Saturday, it will set at 5:28 p.m. on Sunday, according to timeanddate.org.
Here’s what to know about the tradition before setting your clocks back this weekend.
What’s the purpose of daylight saving time?
Daylight saving time is used to save energy during the warmer months, especially for farmers working outside.
Daylight saving time was enacted in the United States as a legal requirement in 1966 by the Uniform Time Act. Pretty much all of the U.S. follows the tradition except Hawaii, the majority of Arizona, American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
But in recent years, the tradition has been a topic of controversy, with 19 states passing laws to enact permanent daylight saving time Kansas is not among them. But because the laws cannot be enacted without federal approval, nothing has changed yet.
A 2021 bill in Congress called the Sunshine Protection Act also hasn’t seen any movement since it became stagnant in the U.S. House of Representatives.
