Halloween night could be a chilly one for Wichita trick-or-treaters.

The National Weather Service’s forecast shows a low of around 39 degrees on Thursday, Oct. 31. The forecast shows clear skies, with a sunny day and a daytime high of 60.

While the city and county don’t have set trick or treat times for the area, the most common times are traditionally 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. — according to Sedgwick County’s website. But if you’re waiting for the sun to go down to start collecting candy, the sun should set in the Wichita area at 6:31 p.m., according to timeanddate.com.

If you’re planning on handing out candy from your home Thursday, be sure to keep your front porch light on. Turn your porch light off if you don’t want to participate.

Staying safe on Halloween 2024

Here are some tips for staying safe while participating in the holiday activities, from Sedgwick County’s website:

  • Make sure children under 12 have adult supervision.
  • Use crosswalks and traffic signals when crossing the street.
  • Don’t run.
  • Always use sidewalks and paths.
  • Look out for cars when on street.
  • Carry a flashlight.

Additionally, the county’s website recommends for kids’ costumes to not have masks that could block vision and to be light-colored. Reflective tape can be added to bags and costumes to be more visible at night.

If you’re going to be out driving on Halloween night, it’s especially important to be aware of your surroundings, especially in neighborhoods. The county recommends:

  • Stay below the speed limit.
  • Turn your headlights on earlier than usual.
  • Eliminate all distractions.
  • Be extra alert when in residential areas.

Before sending kids trick or treating, be sure to review with them how to call 911 for emergencies.
