Work release facility resident, 44, dies unexpectedly at work in Wichita

A 44-year-old resident of the Kansas Department of Corrections Wichita Work Release Facility died unexpectedly Thursday at his workplace in Wichita.

The resident was identified as Joshua Degroot of Wichita, a KDOC news release said.

EMS was called after Degroot was found unresponsive at work. Coworkers performed life-saving measures until first responders arrived.

Degroot died at the scene. The circumstances of his death are being investigated by Wichita police with help from the KDOC. The cause of death will be determined after an autopsy, according to the release.

He was serving a 44-month sentence for two convictions of aggravated battery in Leavenworth County.
