Loose, falling concrete closed Eisenhower airport bridge, west Kellogg lanes. Is it safe?
The bridge over west Kellogg that leads to Wichita’s Dwight D. Eisenhower Airport was closed Monday after pieces of concrete fell onto the highway below.
The bridge was opened hours later and is safe to use, Kansas Department of Transportation spokesperson J.B. Wilson said Tuesday.
On Monday afternoon, Wichita police closed the northbound bridge from Ridge Road to the airport and two westbound lanes of Kellogg after reports of debris falling from the bridge, KDOT said.
The bridge was reopened at 3:15 p.m.
“Some minor concrete material, which can naturally occur due to changes in weather conditions, fell from the southbound Eisenhower Parkway bridge onto westbound U.S. 54. A bucket truck was used to clear any additional loose material,” Wilson said.
KDOT inspectors determined the bridge and roadways are safe to drive on. A bridge designer is inspecting the bridge Tuesday to assess if any further repair is needed.
“Traffic has since returned to normal, and no further disruptions are expected,” Wilson added.
