A 23-year-old man drowned in the lake at OJ Watson Park after heading into the water after a ball on Sunday.

Authorities responded to a submersion call shortly before 1 p.m. at the south Wichita park.

Wichita police spokesperson Andrew Ford said people who were there saw the man go under water.

The Wichita Fire Department searched the water and found the man one hour after the time of the call. WFD and Sedgwick County EMS performed life-saving measures and took him to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis, police said.

The man was pronounced dead at 2:33 p.m. Sunday. His identity has not been released.

There is no indication that drugs or alcohol were a factor in the man’s drowning, Ford said.

The park’s 40-acre lake is used for fishing and pedal boats.
