UPDATE: Newton police arrest suspect in connection with bomb threats
Newton police have arrested a suspect in connection with three bomb threats that were made against the city Wednesday afternoon, the department announced on Facebook.
The suspect, whom the department has not identified, is also connected with a Newton bomb threat made on Sept. 29, the post said.
Newton police Lt. Bryan Hall said Harvey County emergency dispatchers received a call around 2:45 p.m. in which a man claimed he had planted bombs at three locations in town. The locations were the Dillons on North Main Street, the Newton Public Library and a community corrections facility, Hall said.
Police evacuated all of the sites, and “when the time frame had elapsed when he had identified that it would be detonated,” officers entered the buildings and cleared them, Hall said.
No devices were found.
The department said in its Facebook post it was “pleased with the speedy resolution and hope it helps our community rest easy tonight.”
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Wichita Police Department’s bomb squad assisted in the case, Hall said.
