The man who died in a crash after a van rear-ended a semi at a roundabout at Broadway Street and I-135 in Newton has been identified as 20-year-old Dandre Lorenzo Jones of Wichita, authorities said.

The incident was reported at 10:38 a.m. Monday when a semi that was going north on an access road between First Street and Broadway stopped at the roundabout and was struck by a cleaning van, Newton Communications Director Erin McDaniel said.

Jones, who was a passenger in the work van, died at the scene of the crash from his injuries, the Kansas Highway Patrol said.

Authorities say speed is believed to be a factor in the collision.

The driver of the cleaning van, a 22-year-old Wichita man, sustained suspected minor injuries. The driver and passenger of the semi, both men, ages 23 and 38, had no apparent injuries, according to the report.

The roundabout at Broadway and I-135 will be closed off for the next few hours as authorities work the crash scene, the Newton Police Department said in a Facebook post.
