With Halloween just days away, now would be a good time to make plans and stock up on candy if you’re planning on participating in trick-or-treating this year.

While the city of Wichita and Sedgwick County don’t have set times for trick-or-treating, the popular hours in the area are 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Halloween night — Tuesday, Oct. 31 — according to Sedgwick County’s website.

The sun will set at 6:32 p.m. Tuesday in Wichita, according to Time and Date, a Norway-based online clock. The Weather Channel forecasts Tuesday evening will see mostly clear skies in the area with a low around 21 degrees.

If you’re participating in the tradition Tuesday, make sure your house is lit up to invite nearby trick-or-treaters. If you don’t want to participate this year, keep your front porch light off to signify to you don’t have any candy to hand out.

If you’re the trick-or-treater yourself, or you’re helping out, make sure you take necessary precautions to keep the holiday fun and safe.

Staying safe while trick or treating

Sedgwick County says children younger than 12 should not be outside without adult supervision. If you are sending your children older than 12 out to trick-or-treat, it’s important to make sure they knowm how to best stay safe, including how and when they should call 911.

Here are some tips to staying safe if you’re walking outside Tuesday, from Sedgwick County’s website:

  • Use crosswalks when crossing the street
  • Follow traffic signals
  • Don’t use electronics while walking
  • Carry glow sticks or flashlights
  • Add reflective tape to costumes and bags
  • Avoid masks if possible to not obstruct vision

If you’re going to be driving Tuesday evening, it is especially important to take additional safety measures knowing there will be an influx of people on the streets. Here are the county’s tips for drivers:

  • Drive below the speed limit
  • Be especially aware when driving in neighborhoods
  • Eliminate all distractions when driving
  • Turn your headlights on earlier in the day

If you want to participate in Halloween activities but don’t want to go out trick-or-treating, there are multiple events around Wichita in the days leading up to the holiday you can attend.
