A 10-year-old boy has been hospitalized after he was struck by a car while crossing the street Wednesday morning in Maize.

Officers responded at 7:15 a.m. to an injury accident at the intersection of 45th and James streets, which is west of 45th and Maize Road, Maize Police Chief Jeff Weible said.

The Maize School District student was using the crosswalk signal to cross 45th Street. An eastbound driver on 45th stopped, but a driver heading west did not stop and struck the child in the crosswalk, according to Weible.

Witnesses said the crosswalk signals were activated when the crash occurred. The child was taken to a hospital in serious but stable condition, Weible said.

Police are working to learn what led to the collision.
