Christening of new trucks for Wichita parks department had a few hiccups

It appeared to be a routine city event.

Wichita Mayor Brandon Whipple was at the park maintenance building on Friday morning with city park officials to help christen two new trash trucks, named Maverick and Goose. The trucks will be used to clean up refuse bins in city parks and other public areas.

The christening, instead of a ribbon-cutting, was something not done before, said Troy Houtman, director of Park and Recreation for Wichita, in a video livestreamed on the city’s YouTube channel.

But things went slightly awry.

The bottle of bubbly held by Whipple did not break. Not even after seven tries.

“That is a tough bottle,” said one onlooker.

After switching to a different bottle, the mayor was successful.
