Driving on I-135 in north Wichita this weekend? Watch for these major closures, detours
Work on the North Junction at I-135 and K-96 will cause highway closures and detours this weekend.
On Saturday, all southbound lanes of I-135 at K-96 will be closed from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Traffic will be detoured onto southbound I-235.
On Sunday, all northbound lanes will be closed from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Traffic will detour to eastbound K-96 to Hillside to westbound K-96 to northbound I-135.
Construction workers will be placing bridge beams on the southbound I-135 flyover at eastbound K-96. Most of the closures and detours will be from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, according to a Kansas Department of Transportation news release.
The construction is part of a KDOT project that began in 2021 and is intended to alleviate congestion and hazards at the north Wichita interchange. The work is expected to be completed by December 2026.
Here’s a list of other closures and detours related to the work over the weekend.
Saturday
▪ Westbound K-254 exit to southbound I-135 will be closed.
▪ Northbound I-235 exiting onto southbound I-135 will be detoured to eastbound K-96 to Hillside, to westbound K-96 to Hydraulic, south to 29th Street on ramp to southbound I-135.
▪ All westbound K-96 traffic coming from Oliver will detour to northbound Hillside.
▪ All westbound K-96 traffic coming from east of Oliver will detour to southbound Oliver to westbound 21st Street.
▪ All northbound Hillside traffic south of K-96 will detour onto eastbound K-96.
▪ All southbound Hillside traffic north of K-96 will detour onto eastbound 37th Street to southbound Oliver to westbound 21st.
▪ The northbound I-135 exit to Hydraulic will be closed.
▪ Evening and overnight, the Hydraulic on ramp to northbound I-135 will be closed.
Sunday
▪ All westbound K-96 traffic coming from Oliver will detour to northbound Hillside.
▪ All westbound K-96 traffic coming from east of Oliver will detour to southbound Oliver to westbound 21st.
▪ All northbound Hillside traffic south of K-96 will detour onto eastbound K-96.
▪ All southbound Hillside traffic north of K-96 will detour onto eastbound 37th Street to southbound Oliver to westbound 21st.
