Fireworks complaints? Call or text this number instead of 911 in and around Wichita
If you have a complaint about fireworks, parties or noise as people celebrate the Fourth of July holiday, authorities want you to call or text Sedgwick County’s non-emergency number so you don’t tie up 911 lines.
The non-emergency number, 316-290-1011, will be open 6 p.m. to 3 a.m. daily from Friday to July 5.
The line is available for reporting nuisances in Sedgwick County that don’t pose a threat to anyone’s life or property, according to a news release.
The county activates its non-emergency number on days with a history of high nuisance calls, like New Years Eve and the Fourth of July, to ensure 911 call takers are free to answer emergency calls.
Anyone who phones or messages 911 with a nuisance report while the line is active will be transferred to the non-emergency line.
Fireworks sales begin this week. Each city in Sedgwick County determines when fireworks can be sold and discharged, and the type of firework allowed varies by city. A partial list of sales and discharge dates and times is posted at www.sedgwickcounty.org/fire/fireworks. Check other cities’ websites for dates and times.
In Wichita, fireworks can be sold June 27 to July 4. Non-aerial fireworks can be discharged from 10 a.m. to midnight June 27 to July 4. Aerial fireworks have a shorter discharge window, 10 a.m. to midnight July 1-4, according to the Wichita Fire Department’s fireworks information webpage.
People are encouraged to shoot off fireworks in the same jurisdiction where they buy them since rules vary about what is legal.
