Airfare expected to cost 40% more this summer. Explore 6 flights out of Wichita under $200
July is right around the corner, and Kansans looking forward to summer air travel should expect bustling flights and expensive tickets.
Auto club AAA Kansas predicts a busy travel season for Kansas, expecting a more than 12% increase in people traveling by airplane for their summer vacations.
“Bookings for hotels, car rentals and activities such as sightseeing tours or daily excursions are up almost 30% over 2022 for travel between Memorial Day and Labor Day, and those numbers are expected to climb further yet,” a June 15 press release from the company reads.
According to AAA, airfare is expected to increase by 40% this year compared to previous years, which can make purchasing plane tickets more costly.
“There’s a lot of pent up demand still for travel, and this goes back to COVID when a lot of people put off travel,” Shawn Steward, manager of public and government affairs for AAA Kansas, told The Wichita Eagle. “And now, last summer and this summer, we’re seeing a strong and very robust travel season ... across all modes of transportation.”
A lack of supply is another reason for the uptick in airfare costs, he said.
“With air travel, there’s a limited supply of seats out there and in some cases airlines have scaled back their scheduled flights just due to staffing issues and logistics, and so with fewer flights and fewer seats available ... that’s whats driving the robust increase in airfares,” Steward said.
If you are traveling by plane this summer, Steward said to expect big crowds.
“We’ve seen an increase number of people going through (Transportation Security Administration) security,” he said. “I would expect if you’re traveling by air expect very busy airports, full flights ... as soon as you know where you want to go start looking at flights as early as possible so you not only have your choice of flights but you have a better chance of getting flights at a cost that meets your budget.”
