A 17-year-old Derby boy died in an accident Tuesday night just southeast of McConnell Air Force Base, Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Nathan Gibbs said Wednesday.

He was traveling north on Rock Road, near 39th Street South, in a 2005 Subaru Horizon when he left the road and hit a tree row. The teenager died at the scene.

First responders were called at 11:42 p.m. after the family found the boy by tracking the GPS on his phone. The family was checking on the boy after an argument and followed the GPS to him, Gibbs said. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
