Billowing smoke from a downtown Wichita building threw a monkey wrench in the morning commute Friday.

Fire trucks responding to the report at Douglas and Market shortly after 5:30 a.m. prompted the closing of both streets for several hours, authorities said. The building on the northeast corner of the intersection is undergoing renovation.

Crews could smell something burning when they went into the building but struggled to find the source, a Sedgwick County emergency dispatcher said.

Fire crews finally cleared the scene at about 9 a.m., reopening Douglas and Market to traffic. No injuries were reported.
