Derby High School was evacuated Wednesday after a student brought a grenade to school. It wasn’t live.

Around 2:35 p.m., a student reported seeing a picture of another student with a grenade on Snapchat, a social media site.

“This was immediately investigated and the student in question shared that the device in the image was not live,” Derby Public Schools spokesperson Katie Carlson said in an email.

Derby police and the Wichita Police Department Bomb Squad also responded to the school. Police had the school evacuated before they determined the grenade was not live and there was no threat, she said, adding that students then went back to get their stuff.

The delay only held up buses a few minutes from their normal departure, Carlson said. The grenade, which was the outer shell with the bottom drilled out, was confiscated by Derby police, she said.

Carlson would not say if the student faces any disciplinary action.
