Officials say 9-year-old who was subject of alert is safe

A 9-year-old girl with Asperger’s syndrome who walked away from a Wichita elementary school Monday afternoon was found a short time later and was fine, officials said.

The Exploited and Missing Child Unit had asked local media to broadcast information about the girl, who walked away from Washington Elementary School, 424 N. Pennsylvania, near Central and I-135, at 1:30 p.m. Monday, said Dan Dillon, spokesman for the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.

Around 4 p.m., Dillon said in an e-mail that the girl had been found and was fine. The girl’s name was not released.
