One person died in a house fire in west Wichita on Friday night, Wichita Fire Department battalion chief Jose Ocadiz said Saturday.

The age of the man, the cause of his death and the fire and the extent of damage are all still under investigation.

Firefighters were called about a grass fire at 8:52 p.m. in the 1200 block of North Wilbur, which is near 13th and Ridge. Arriving firefighters saw flames from the basement of a home at 1302 N. Wilbur. Firefighters went inside and found the man unresponsive on the main level, near the door leading to the garage, Ocadiz said, adding he was the only person home.

First responders administered CPR. He was taken to the Ascension Via Christi St. Francis burn center, where he was pronounced dead.
