AT&T Mobility customers may be eligible for refunds

AT&T Mobility customers charged for third-party services without their consent can receive money back.

The refunds are part of a $105 million, multistate settlement among AT&T Mobility, attorneys general nationwide, the Federal Trade Commission and the Federal Communications Commission, according to Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt.

The payment resolves allegations that AT&T Mobility made third-party charges on customers’ mobile phone bills, which is known as “mobile cramming.” Under the settlement, AT&T Mobility will pay $80 million into an FTC-administered fund set aside for refunds to cramming victims.

To apply, go to www.ftc.gov/att. Questions about refund eligibility can be answered on the website or by calling the claims administrator at 877-819-9692.

“Consumers have a right to be clearly informed about the services they are purchasing – and the cost,” Schmidt said in a news release announcing the settlement.

“This settlement returns to consumers charges for programs they didn’t know they were signing up for and were often unable to cancel.”

Questionable sales or marketing practices can be reported to the Kansas Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division at 800-432-2310 or online at www.InYourCornerKansas.org.
