A Sedgwick County deputy headed to a disturbance was killed when they collided with another vehicle Friday night near Maize, sheriff Jeff Easter said.

The other driver was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Easter told media during a news briefing Friday night.

The wreck happened around 9:26 p.m. at North 135th Street West and West 29th Street North. The deputy was headed south on 135 and the other driver was going west on 29th, he said, adding there are stop signs for 29th, but not 135th.

“We don’t know a lot of facts,” he said. “We’ll be downloading the facts on the vehicle and we should have more facts in the morning.”

Easter said the sheriff’s office would hold a news conference at 11 a.m. or noon today. He said the deputy graduated from a recent academy.
