City crews worked over the weekend to mitigate odors at the south Wichita sewage plant that officials had warned might smell worse than usual for up to two weeks.

A Monday news release said mitigation efforts “appear successful” and that no odor complaints have been filed in connection to the plant since the increased odors warning went into effect on Friday.

“Crews processed 20 tankers of treated bio solids over the weekend, adding chemical suppressants and lime to help reduce odors,” the release said.

“City wastewater crews monitored the area surrounding the wastewater plant and did not notice increased odors.”

Mitigation efforts are ongoing.

On Friday, officials said an operator error was likely to blame for any increased odors in the vicinity of the plant. The apparent change in treatment processes is still being investigated.

The city says there are no mechanical issues with the plant at 57th Street south and Hydraulic, which is one of four such facilities in Wichita.
